The Scandent system
Scandent is a radio frequency identification (RFID) system that prevents loss, theft, and resident wandering in nursing homes. The system consists of RFID readers and antennas, web-based software, and passive, battery-less RFID tags that can be embedded in or attached to virtually anything found in a nursing home, including dentures, hearing aids, glasses, laptops, phones, wallets, jewelry, clothing, remote controls, TVs and other items.
The setup
The RFID readers and antennas are mounted at strategic "checkpoints" through which lost or stolen items are most likely to pass. These include nursing home entrances and exits, as well as corridors through which dirty linen and garbage must pass before exiting the facility. Checkpoints can also be set up in the kitchen and in facility elevators.
Item detection
When a tagged item passes through a checkpoint, an alarm will sound to alert staff. Found item alerts will pop up in the software and on tablet computers at the checkpoints, and email alerts will be sent to designated staff members. Scandent can also automatically send text messages and make phone calls to designated staff to report found items.
